Walter Gilbert at Harvard University and Fred Sanger at Cambridge independently described two methods for rapidly sequencing DNA in 1977. These methods were such a huge step forward that the two scientists won the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1980.
Led to the ability to molecularly trace geneology back to our earliest (read chimpanzees) ancestors.
