is was no way to predict when God will would kill you for disobeying even the most seemingly inconsequential command.
(e.g. looking back, picking up sticks on the sabbath, cursing a Jew, spilling one's seed, complaining, making fun of Elisha's bald head, ad nauseum)
That is, there was no way in 1500 BC.
Today there are NO consequences for disobeying his commands.
You won't even go to hell, for as we read in John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
So, mere "belief" gives one everlasting life, regardless of what you did on earth.
Not even Hitler, who had over 6,000,000 Jews killed, was struck down by God's wrath.
If mere slavery, which god condones,
brought the 10 plagues on the Egyptians,
shouldn't Hitler's execution of 6,000,000 Isrealites have brought forth some kind of vengence from god
.. if there is a god?
Israel is still god's chosen people as we learn in Jeremiah 3:14
Return, O backsliding children," says the Lord, "for I am married to you. I will take you, one from a city and two from a family, and I will bring you to Zion."
And please, no "Oh, that was the old Testament" nonsense; Jesus himself says that we are to obey the old testament commands.
God fully intended for the Bible -- the entire Bible -- to be a timeless book.
The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.
Jesus says, "For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished."
When Jesus says "the law" what he is talking about is all of the laws that God lays down in the Old Testament.
Matthew 5:19-21 He declared:
"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them"
God is kind of like a homicidal Energizer bunny. He keeps killing, and killing, and killing...
